Nepali people follow their own calendar system known as the Vikram Era or Vikram Sambat. New Year is called Nava Varsha in the Nepali language. The Vikram Sambat was founded by the Bharatbarsha emperor Vikramaditya of Ujjain following his victory over the Sakas in 56 B.C. Vikram Sambat calendar is a Solar calendar based on ancient Hindu traditions. Vikram Sambat is 56.7 years ahead of the solar Gregorian calendar.
The new year of Vikram Samwat is one of the many festivals of Nepal, family gatherings, the exchange of good wishes, and participation in rituals to ensure good fortune in the coming year.
Every year, our organization celebrates the new year by organizing a grand program. Likewise this year also we celebrated New Year 2078 B.S. by conducting melodious Bajans, Swami’s Divine Darshan, and Divine discourse in Shree Sanjay Sai Vrindavan Aashram.
Divine Discourse:
Every day is like a new year for us, Every moment is like a new time for us.
A new year is not just for entertainment and giving best wishes. A new year is a day for initiating the new beginning by controlling all the senses, erasing all the bad emotions, thoughts, enmity, etc., and giving best wishes even to our enemies. It is the day where you even forgive your enemy and make your enemy a friend. In every Discourse, I have been saying “Question Yourself.” Even today I say the same, “Question Yourself.” What kind of question? i.e. Who is the most successful person in the world? The most successful person is that who has conquered Ahamkara(Ego). Man’s greatest enemy is ego only.
Usually, there is a belief “whatever one does at the starting of the new year upcoming days in the entire year will be same”. With this belief, in the early morning of the new year, many people do Yoga. On New Year many people make new resolutions. Many people commit: “from today I will do this, I won’t do this”, but in reality, not only New Year’s resolution, every day’s resolution won’t make any difference unless we keep our senses under control. Only New Year’s resolution will result in perfection is a misconception. If we are to defy the senses, take a resolution, and proceed ahead for the perfection, if we begin to channel consciousness to accomplish that perfection, that day when we resist the evil thoughts, enmity, attachment, anger, etc. and resolve to do something that day is like New Year for us, Every moment is like new time for us.
– Bhagwan Baba
