Devotees experience
Journey with Sai: From Bhagawan Shree Sathya Sai to Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai
From the very beginning of Swami’s mission, I was blessed to witness the divine early leelas of Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai Baba and serve in a responsible role within the organizing committee. I was granted with countless opportunities to participate in seva activities and, through them, received both direct and subtle experiences of divine grace and miraculous blessings.
Though I was never formally affiliated with any Sai center, I remained deeply involved in bhajans and seva dedicated to Bhagawan Shree Sathya Sai Baba. By His grace, I received the opportunity to celebrate Buddha Purnima in 2056 BS (1999 AD) at Brindavan, Whitefield in India. The venue was beautifully adorned, and the divine presence of Bhagawan Shree Sathya Sai Baba filled our hearts with joy as we participated in the sacred programs.
I heard that 9–10 Nepali Sai devotees were asked to submit their names for bhajan singing in Whitefield in the divine presence. Since I wasn’t a member of any Sai Center, I wasn’t included. It saddened me, but I consoled myself—after all, not even a leaf moves without His will. Gradually, the memory of that moment faded from my mind.
During the seven-day stay at Whitefield, we heard that Bhagawan Shree Sathya Sai Baba would bless Seva Dal members with a special darshan in the bhajan hall after their duties. We waited outside while the Seva Dal sat in orderly rows inside. Baba arrived and, with His divine hand, performed abhishekam by sprinkling sacred water upon them. What a holy moment! How fortunate they were to be blessed directly by the divine hand of the Lord. I wondered what karma had earned them such grace.
About six years later, in 2060 BS (2003 AD), I had my first darshan of Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai Baba. I had been hearing about Him from Soni Sairam, a colleague at my office. Though His form was different, His leelas were said to mirror those of Sathya Sai Baba. Soni spoke of the miraculous acts of the young Baba—then just 14 – 15 years old—such as manifesting Shiva Lingams from His mouth, creating Vibhuti and divine ornaments, and conducting grand Narayan Seva. At first, I couldn’t believe it. But as I heard more, a longing for darshan began to grow.
Soni invited me several times—to Narayan Seva, to programs at Jain Bhavan, to Thursday bhajans at New Road—but months passed without a single darshan. Eventually, I found myself constantly visualizing the radiant, youthful image of Shree Sanjay Sai Baba that Soni had described, even more than Sathya Sai’s familiar form. A restlessness grew within me, but the time and opportunity for darshan never aligned.
After about 8–9 months, Soni informed me that Baba would be attending a puja at a Sai devotee’s home in Old Baneshwor on the Saturday before Lakshmi Puja. She said Baba would manifest a Shiva Lingam from His mouth. Soni was supposed to pick me up on the way to the venue. I waited on the road for 40 minutes, but Soni didn’t come to pick me up. Disheartened, I returned home.
The next day at work, I confronted Soni. She said, “ Didi, I waited for you at the same place, for 30 minutes, why did you not come?” Hearing her, I felt dizzy and sat down, realizing that perhaps I wasn’t destined for darshan. It was as if Baba had placed a divine veil between us—we couldn’t see each other.
I recall reading in the book Nara Narayan Gufa Ashram about a profound leela of Bhagawan Shree Sathya Sai Baba. In that sacred account, military personnel were stationed at the very location where eleven ascetics had taken residence. Yet, for six full months, the soldiers were unable to see them—though they shared the same physical space. The ascetics remained completely unseen, veiled from worldly perception, until Baba willed otherwise.
That same leela had now unfolded in my life.
Later, Baba instructed Soni to bring us – myself and some colleagues – in pairs to Rukmini Sairam’s home. And thus, I finally received my first darshan of Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai Baba.
At that time, around 10–12 women of Baba’s mother’s age were drawn into His divine childhood leelas and began serving in His mission as per His command. We started with pure drinking water service, Narayan Seva, and health camps—miraculously sustained with just Rs. 5 daily contributions. Even today, it amazes me how it all came together.
Baba took guardianship of a children’s home in Kathmandu for a year, and from Buddha Purnima 2062 BS (2005 AD), regular bhajans began every Saturday at 2 PM.
Our first Guru Purnima with Baba was celebrated at a School in Lalitpur district, run by Rani Gurung. Baba personally trained me in bhajan practice at Kamala Sairam’s home, playing the tabla Himself. He instructed, “Shashi, you lead the bhajan.” The hall was large, and as we sang, Baba—dressed in white robes with short hair—moved among the devotees, manifesting Shiva Lingams, Vibhuti, and other divine items with His sacred hand. It was a joyous and blessed Guru Purnima in His presence.
The next day, we gathered at Shanta Sairam’s home to discuss the program. Suddenly, Baba said, “Shashi, you were saddened that you couldn’t sing bhajan before Sathya Sai Baba, weren’t you?” I asked, “Baba, how did You know?” He replied, “You ask how I knew? I am Baba—I know everything.”
Then came Krishna Janmashtami. The third-floor rooftop of the children’s home was decorated for the celebration. Baba Himself coordinated the seva, and I and another person were assigned duty at gate. We took turns visiting the rooftop to witness the miracles. After the program ended, four of us remained with Baba. I sat beside His sofa, with Kumud Sairam, Satya Sairam, and my sister seated in front. Suddenly, Baba’s divine hand moved in its familiar gesture, and with the words “Here, for you,” a stream of sacred Ganga water flowed from His finger onto my head. I cupped my hands and received the holy water. Baba also blessed the other three ladies with abhishekam.
In this way, the two divine events I had witnessed in Brindavan, Whitefield were fulfilled in Nepal through Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai Baba’s grace. He not only completed those leelas but also strengthened my faith from its very roots.
These and countless other experiences have made me certain that Bhagawan Shree Sanjay Sai Baba is indeed the same divine embodiment. We are truly blessed.
